Timornewsline, - Luta Hamutuk NGO has called on the Timorese Parliament to produce a death penalty law to punish corruptors in the country. Director for Luta Hamutuk, Mericio Akara said this law needs to be drafted to prevent people from committing corruption within the state institutions and it will make people to be afraid of engaging in corruption.
Speaking to Timornewsline Friday (17/06), Akara said, Luta Hamutuk proposes to the National Parliament to make a draft of law for the Anti-corruption about death penalty, although the country's constitution prohibits it. Akara stressed the Timorese constitution does not mention about the death penalty, yet the Parliament should review it, because corruption issue is considered as special case.
"I think the Parliament should better look at this issue, because corruption is a special case. Our constitution does not talk about the death penalty, but I think we need to put it in the Anti-corruption's law, because corruption is also an extra-ordinary problem in global area". Akara said.
Akara added, corruption is an extra-ordinary case, because when it appears it can affect credibility of the Government in the country and can impact the country's revenue, as well as reduce quality of public assistance to the Timorese people.
Like or dislike Timor-Leste should apply death penalty to corruptors, because corruption is a global issue, Akara said. Afry.

Voçê com essas ideias parece o Lenine, a pena de morte está fora de moda, TL não precisa de pena de morte, precisa de educação e respeito pelos outros.
Para sua informação, Portugal foi um dos primeiros países a abolir a pena de morte e é com grande honra que conseguimos que em todas as ex colónia Portuguesas a Pena de Morte não existe. Por isso em TL nunca irá acontecer a Pena de Morte. Só Deus tem esse direito, de tirar a vida a alguém.
A Luta Hamutuk caiu muitos pontos na minha consideração com essas declarações. É triste ouvir um rapaz novo, que nada sabe da vida falar dessa maneira.

RDTL Constitution Article 29.3:
"There shall be no death penalty in the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste."
Timor-Leste has signed international conventions which also prohibit the death penalty. There are better ways to prevent corruption than than repressively violating human rights.

He was saying that Corruption is an extraordinary crime, that is why we need an extraordinary works to prevent such crime. Include a special law. He was just mentioned that in other countries dead penalty is an option. However, TL's constitution prohibitied such kind of law, so maybe MPs can think about TL's way to deal with the corruption issues...That was the point, actually...

To fight corruption will take time and it is important for us to put as much efforts as we can to fight KKN. I am sure we will get there at one point, it took many years before Indonesia can at least fight corruption and yet still facing big challenges.
Education, Law enforcement, and revive our sense of nationalism are ways to fight the corruption. It is not wise to even think of having death penalty applies in our country.

TL MPs as a Law Maker Institution will think and discuss on how to combat a corruption issue in Timor Leste...it is not about personal. An idea of death penalty maybe just a reaction of actual condition in Timor Leste. Such reaction maybe not just from AKARA but other people as well, who knows?
Then it is very bad a reaction. There is no need to call for such a thing. Whatever people think death penalty should not be comtemplated. If Mr Akara wants people to take his organisation seriously, this kind of call is not the best. In fact, it is the worst call since the inception of Luta Hamutuk.
That Akara guy should be replaced by a more modest Timorese person - and someone who is more intelligent.
Akara must love looking at photos of himself. Because it seems that he is the 'big man' in any photos published with articles about Luta Hamutuk.

How bizarre, how bizarre...
This is kind of call could also came as result of frustration of government not doing anything about the corruption.
Let's forget what Akara what Akara say and move on. It is not worth to duell on. It is a waste of time.
The problem is that Akara represents what could be considered a prominent NGO in East Timor.
For its director to come out and make calls like this is quite unsettling, more so in a country like East Timor which already has seen so much killing in its recent past.
Where are the human rights this NGO purports to defend and promote?
This is only only bad for the image of Mr Akara but ultimately for Luta Hamutuk.
I wonder what Luta Hamutuk's funding partners must be thinking right now.

Well.. I would say that death penalty is not an option however considering that fact that corruption is such a disgusting crime and unacceptablecriminal behavior in Timor Leste, a country with so many poor people with widespread malnutrition among the children and high percentage of unemployment as well as infrastructure, health, education sectors among others in dire needs of improvement, hence in my realistic and humble view those corrupt people are worse than a murderer because they can be considered as a group of mass murderers, a bunch of killers to the nation weak spots. And therefore corrupt oficials or anyone who found guilty of corruption must be punished with no mercy.
The deserving punishment for corruption in our beloved Timor Leste is LIFE IN PRISON or at least 100 years spent in jail and most of their time must be for working unpaid for community and for building the country infrastructures as unpaid laborers! If certain laws need to be changed for that purpose then so be it.
For the interests and dream of timorese people to live a better life and prosperous future must surpass the short term interests of a group of shortminded easy money spongers and disgusting corrupted shameful people in the country.
Timor Leste needs to progress as a prosperous country because it deserves that goal and worth the long years of strugle to freedom. Corruption is a great obstacle to that purpose, to clean that obstacle, the heaviest and no mercy punishment other than death penalty must and shall be put into practice. Those timorese heroes who died for freedom during 24 years of strugle dreamed for a country with social justice, equality in all forms and most importantly a prosperous free nation and people. So corruption is intolerable the way forward for punishment for that disgusting crime is LIFE IN PRISON OR 100 YEARS IN JAIL!
