Dili, Timornewsline, - Prosecutor-General, Ana Pessoa said English language plays very important role to help develop judicial system in the country and it is being windows of opportunity for the Timorese legal practitioners to learn from other countries.
"I am very happy to be present here, due to Australia and USAID offer training for our institution, such as Commission Anti Corruption, Timorese National Police (PNTL). English is very important in judiciary because it is windows of opportunity for our legal practitioners," Pessoa said.
The prosecutor-general made the comments during a speech marking for the opening ceremony of English legal terms training course facilitated by Community Development Interest (CDI) in cooperation with Justice Facility last Friday.
Pessoa added Timor - Leste should appreciate the US and AUSAID as they provide the Timorese judicial institutions with English training course. "I am calling for the participants to spend their time to learn, because it is free of charge and should not be absent in the training because the money for the training is from the Australian and American people," Pessoa said.
PNTL commander for Criminal Investigation Unit (SIC) Calistro Gonjaga said English language is very important; therefore he called on his police officers to actively take part in this language training course.
Gonzaga stressed that the door of the world is open for the people who can speak English, as they are able to communicate with people from other countries."I am calling on PNTL officers, especially SIC officers to study hard to know English well because PNTL is cooperating with INTERPOL worldwide," Commander Gonzaga said.
Jose Pedro Camoes from the Timorese Lawyers Association (AATL) Jose Pedro expressed best gratitude to the US and Australia, due they have helped facilitate the Timorese legal practitioners to learn English.
"This is globalization era we need to speak English, and I am calling on the participants to spend their time to learn this language, as it is very important," Camoes said.

Eu nao disse ja que Camoes esteve em Timor e os descendents sao invisuais?
So next time, the timorese court will proceed every process in English. Taur Matan Ruak didn't like Portuguese because F/FDTL members who were condemned did not understand Portuguese, now all judges and lawyers are taking courses in English. If the introduction of Portuguese as official language was confusing, how easy is it to introduce English? The water gets mudder and mudder by minute and those who will get the end of the stick will be the loosers.
In regard to the language issues in Timor-Leste, I think we want to go everywhere but in the end we ended up wasting time, resources, money and ultimately going nowhere! That's why if in my view more timorese human resources in State institutions must be primarily given capacity building in regards to tetum and portuguese languages. Those are two important languages to focus on in its development and teaching in all timorese schools due to their status as timorese official languages. The other languages, apart from tetum and portuguese, must be also given as lessons in school but as just foreign language subjects, no more no less.
Focus on official languages fluency mainly portuguese, due to its complexity as one of timorese official languages, as a subject of serious and widespread training and teaching is more beneficial to Timor-Leste's medium and long terms consolidation as a sovereign nation with its unique historical background in the region and to affirm its delicate identity.

Those are two important languages to focus on in relation to consolidation and development of languages in Timor-Leste. The two languages must be the main focus of teaching in all timorese schools due to their status as timorese official languages. The other languages, apart from tetum and portuguese, must be also given as lessons in school but as just foreign language subjects, no more no less.
