THE Timorese-born Australian woman acquitted last year of conspiring to murder East Timor's President, Jose Ramos-Horta, plans to stand for his job next year.
Today Angelita Pires will announce the formation of a new political party, and her candidacy for the presidency, in the Timorese capital, Dili.
After Dr Ramos-Horta was shot and seriously wounded in Dili in 2008 he accused Ms Pires of being implicated in attacks on himself and the Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmao.
At the time she was the lover of the rebel leader Alfredo Reinado, who was shot dead at Dr Ramos-Horta's presidential compound on the outskirts of Dili.
Ms Pires strenuously denied any involvement in the attacks and was acquitted of charges in the Dili District Court.
The presidential election is likely to be fiercely contested and will happen at a critical time for East Timor, before the scheduled withdrawal of United Nations personnel. Dr Ramos-Horta will be the frontrunner if he decides to stand again.
Other possible candidates include Mari Alkatiri, the leader of Fretilin, the country's largest political party, and Taur Matan Ruak, the chief of the defence forces.
Ms Pires is likely to have strong support in East Timor's western mountains, where Reinado was a heroic figure among many young people.
Trained as a lawyer, she has been living in Darwin, where she grew up, for the past 12 months.
She is married to the Darwin barrister Jon Tippett.

This woman must be dreaming! She has a big ego but she is a nobody with delusions of grandeur.
Does she think that just because she was successful in convincing John Tippet to leave his former wife to marry her, she will also be able to con the the timorese people.
Making a man fall for her would be relatively easy, but a whole nation? C'mon!
I can see a great disappointment and embarrassment coming her way if she really decides to go ahead with her silly ambitions.
I guess she wants to test the water. She did not only convinced Tippet but Reinado fell flat for her too and few others along the way. Those men who potentially could be a leader had fell for her, specially those men who could not keep their trousers zipped.
She has a timorese citizenship so, on that basis she is entitled to run but will she get a vote? There will be some afficcionados for Reinado that will vote for her but enough to scratch the surface. Everyone is entitled to race for the postion as well as most people would like to see eggs all over her face. Bring her on!
There are grounds for some concern if this lady does go ahead with her candidacy.
The concern would have to do with the fact that she would most certainly have to base her campaign on appealing to the many/few? who may still have some sympathy for the late Major Reinado and stirring up those emotions that would be incompatible with the current phase of peace and stability consolidation.
People are just getting to know what it is to leave in peace and relative calm. They don't need a return to the past.
Oh well it is up to the leaders to handdle the situation isn't it. In a democracy every citizen has the right to exercise it, in this case, running for the election. However, I don't think that she will be able to command/stirring up those emotions at the same level as in 2005/6. At that time it got to that point because there were current leaders behind it. She was stupid enough to fall into a trap that clearly became her only problem when things went wrong. Remember, had Reinado surrendered to the authorities after the 2007 elections it is likely that he would still alive. Reinado was pawn and no longer needed but Reinado saw it differently and turned against those who put him that situation in the first place hence his destiny.
I do definitely think that Angelita has no ability to stirr things up as Reinado and some aficcionados do then the authorities will come down on them with great force!
