Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao is angry with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), because they did not implement their promise to provide US $2 million to the Ministry of Social Solidarity to return the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) to their home.
PM Gusmao is angry with UNDP, regarding the recent released report from UNDP that shows that the Government is making efforts to develop this country, but unfortunately 41 % of the people in the country are still poor.
PM Gusmao said UNDP did not fulfill their promise, because they did not provide money based on the total amount they promised.
“President Jose Ramos Horta called us when UNDP released their report in order to resolve the problem of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and the Minister of Social and Solidarity Maria Domingas Alves told us that UNDP will help the Government to return the IDPs to their homes and I said this was good.
We returned the IDPs to their homes during one and a half years. A week later after the meeting, the Minister of Social Solidarity came with a gloomy face, because UNDP only provided US $400 thousand and Minister Alves asked them why they only provided this small amount of money and they replied by saying that they would spend US $1 million to pay managers and project advisors,” PM Gusmao said.
PM Gusmao said the recent report of UNDP is a motivation and reference for the Government to better develop this country to help people in the country prosper.
