DILI: Finance Minister Emilia Pires said the decision to give the Hera port project to Australian company Lifese Engineering in 2010 was made by a technical service operating under the office of Deputy Prime Minister Mario Viegas Carrascalao.

Ms Pires said the Prime Minister’s office took responsibility for the project after Mr Carrascalao resigned.

“After Carrascalao resigned, (it) went under (the office of the) Prime Minister. The finance ministry did not know anything about this,” she said.

“We only made the payment based on the letter that was there.”

In the future, Ms Pires said, the Ministry of Defence would be responsible for finishing the project.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State for the Council of Ministers Agio Pereira said his council had not discussed the issue yet.

“There was not any discussion of the Hera port. This issue is in the hands of the Defence Ministry,” Mr Pereira said.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Mr Carrascalao recently said that the Secretary of State for Defence, the Secretary of State for Public Works and the Finance Ministry should be held responsible for the Hera port.

He said his office was not aware of the entire process of the project.

Secretary of State for Defence Julio Tomas Pinto recently said the goverment would open a new tender so national companies would have an opportunity to compete for the project.
