DILI: Fretilin says it is ready to negotiate with Australia and oil company Woodside on Greater Sunrise if it wins next year’s election.
Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao has been fighting since 2007 to bring the Greater Sunrise pipeline to Timor-Leste but has not yet been successful.
President of the Republic Jose Ramos-Horta and some NGOs have been calling on the government to involve skilled Timorese people in the negotiations.
But most of AMP’s MPs disagreed with that idea.
“If Fretilin gets trust from the people, of course before the end of the (Greater Sunrise) agreement (in 2013), (the negotiation) will continue,” Fretilin MP Antoninho Bianco told INDEPENDENTE yesterday.
Mr Bianco said Fretilin considered Greater Sunrise a big issue, and was committed to resolving it.
“We (the Fretilin Goverment) made the agreement (with Australia) and ratified (it),” he said.
The Fretilin MP said the Gusmao Government did not have the capacity to negotiate with the Government of Australia and Woodside.
