Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao said he prefers the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) and the Timorese who are becoming experts for the world organization, to go help other countries rather than using their various theories on governance in Timor-Leste.
Gusmao made the comments in relation to the UNMIT report publicized by Tempo Semanal saying PM Xanana is the major obstacle to the process of democracy building in the country.
The report also mentioned that “the Executive, especially the prime minister is looking to seize greater power from the Parliament and the courts [the audit courts will are susceptible to political attacks].
Before 2012, the result of this process is the effective role of the two state bodies [this refers to the Parliament and Courts] to be responsible for the executive,” UNMIT report said.
This report says “the state of rule of law will be reduced and the rule of law of the prime minister will be increased. This can be seen in the structure of the general state budget for 2012.”
During a speech marking the opening ceremony for the UNTL’s Scientific Journey on Tuesday (17/5), Gusmao said UNMIT’s experts do not have enough knowledge to know profoundly about his plan regarding the country’s national development.
Gusmao preferred UNMIT’s experts and the Timorese who are working for UNMIT to help other countries that need their assistance.
“My proposal is for UNMIT and the Timorese experts to help improve Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan and they can help build democracy in Yemen and Libya,” Gusmao said. Gusmao also said UNMIT and the Timorese who are working for UN do not know him very well. “I am very happy, as they do not know Xanana Gusmao.
Now I will tell them what I told the Australian intelligence members in 1999, who came to ask me, “Why do you want to purchase warships from China,” Gusmao said.
