DILI: Plans to build Timor-Leste’s first five-star hotel may not go ahead because of the government’s failure to clear rubbish at the site earmarked for the project, the President of the Republic said.

Dr Jose Ramos-Horta said he had asked the government to remove the rubbish dump in the area of Tasi Tolu where a Singaporean investor wanted to build the luxury hotel.

However, he said there had not been any action from the government.

“This is the fault of our government. Now I don’t believe any more the project will continue,” Dr Ramos-Horta said yesterday after meeting with the investor who had been planning to build Pelikan Paradise in Tasi Tolu last year.

“This investment is very big… $300 million Singapore’s investor (wants) to bring in. This is not the government’s investment.”

He said foreign investors would not come to Timor-Leste if the government did not help to create good conditions for them.

“I am very sad and I say, if we do this to investors, they will go to China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand,” Dr Ramos-Horta said.

President Ramos-Horta also asked the government to remove people who had illegally built houses near the vacant area where Pope John Paul II held mass in 1989.

He said people should respect the historical place.

Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao said his Council of Ministers was still discussing this issue.

But he said he would visit Tasi Tolu to assess the situation.
