Prosecutor General, Ana Pessoa, has presented the number of pending cases that have been filed in the Public Prosecution office in 2010.
They totaled 4,981 cases and there are 3,770 cases in the 2011, adding that the total number of cases that has been investigated is 8,751.
Pessoa said that they sent 798 cases to the court for further legal proceedings, 3,690 cases were investigated, and 5,061 cases are now in the investigation process. Pesoa added that there are many cases pending in the court, because they are lacking human resources, particularly lawyers.
"There is no proper structure of the judiciary, adding that the number of qualified lawyers is still limited," Pesoa said. MP Aniceto Guterres from Fretilin, has called on the competent institutions, particularly the Anti-Corruption Commission (KAK), to speed up the processing of allegations of corruption as people are now waiting for the legal actors to take the necessary actions against corruptors.
MP Guterres added that the KAK institution has existed one year, but it is unknown to the public how many corruption cases been investigated by KAK and submitted it to the Public Prosecution for further legal proceedings.
MP Fernanda Borges from the National Unity Party (PUN), said that the information from Prosecutor General Anna Pessoa showed that the number of corruption cases remains high.

The OPG should carefully select a very small number of corruption prosecutions - on the basis of the strength of available evidence which proves guilt.
If the court decides that a defendant is "guilty" it will then be the judges'responsibility to impose a heavy sentence which might be a deterrence to other corruptors.
And it will then be up to the government and the president to make sure that criminals are not set free before the end of their sentence!
