Obituary: One of our patients, a little girl age 9 from Dili, succumbed 11 January 2011 to heart failure.
She had a defective mitral valve which could have been corrected surgically. Such a procedure, however, is not available in her country.
International teams offer to come and do the surgery but permission to use a local operating theater was not forthcoming.
Rotary in neighboring Australia accepts such cases and after months of lobbying did approve funding. Still nary a hospital would offer surgery to this sick patient.
One said they needed a copy of the echocardiogram which Bairo Pite Clinic had to arrange from Australia itself and then find a way to get it back into Australia to the cardiologists, a tough proposition considering the multiple power outages and poor internet services.
Innumerable emails, contacts with programs as far away as New York and even Viet Nam found no success. More than a year passed.
The Mercy ship with 12 operating rooms came. An nation wide appeal to the US Navy for permission to use one of their ORs… all failed.
All in all, a massive effort for something ridiculously simple: a small girl with a correctable problem, capacity for doing such a case abundant… it should be done.
My failure first… unable to find the words to make things move. But do we dare ask, “Is this the system that serves us best?”
