Director for a local NGO Fundasaun Mahein, Nelson Belo said the Government's nomination of the Civilian to lead the Timorese National Police (PNTL) would bring negative impact on the police force, as it would weaken the institution.

Belo made the statement following Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao's plan of reappointing the incumbent commander for the PNTL, Longuinhos Monteiro for another three years.

Belo stressed that the initiative of the Government to appoint a civilian to lead the police force is good, but it has brought negative impact on the institution.

"The Government started to appoint civilian to lead the police institution in 2009 and it is a part of reforming the institution, but it is not good to appoint a politician to become leader for the PNTL as it will weaken the police institution," Belo said.
