Dili, timornewsline, - MPs in the Parliament have called on the Ministry of Education to explain about its decision on accepting only the secondary schools graduation of 2010 could enter the national university.
MP Francisco Gerenimo from the Fretilin Party said the Ministry of Education should hold socialization on the issue before making decision. “The ministry of education should hold socialization on the issue not making statement suddenly,” Gerenimo said.
Gerenimo also said this country gained its independence to allow its citizens to get access to education not only for the elite people.
National Director for Education, Apolinario Magono said this was the public university; therefore the ministry wanted to improve quality of the university, as many of the students who started studying in 1999 have not completed their study yet.
Student front member, Leandro Isaac Pereira as such a policy was a wrong policy, because it would not give the poor students opportunity to get access to high level education and were not able to enter private university, as it is too expensive.
“The educational ministry’s decision can give a negative impact on the country’s future. It will not give the poor students opportunity to study at national university,” Isac said.
