The United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) has proposed to the Timorese civil security officers to carry weapon and that is a politics, so that it could continue publicizing internationally that Timor-Leste’s security situation is still volatile.
Director for HAK [human right association], Rui Viana made the comments regarding the UNMIT expert’s recent proposal, asking the country to arm the civil security officers.
Viana affirmed that security forces like the Timorese Defense Force (F-FDTL) and the National Police have the right to carry weapon. “The weapons which were at large in the community during the country’s crises in 2006 have not been recalled them all, how can we give the civil security weapon,” Viana said.
Viana explained that the UNMIT’s mandate will end in 2012; therefore it plays a political maneuver, so that its mission could be extended in the country. “If the UNMIT’s concerned about security in Timor-Leste, it is better to support the F-FDTL and PNTL to guarantee security in the country,” Viana said. MPs also said Timor-Leste needed to leave all bad examples created by the United Nations in Timor-Leste.
MP Jose Texeira said the country could only follow some examples which are good for the country. “We can select some good examples from the UN, we can leave bad ones,” Texeira said.
He affirmed that the UN is also incapable of resolving few things, especially the security aspect. MP Duarte Nunes from the Committee B for Defense and Security said the UN was now in the stage of handing over security responsibility to the country, yet it maintained its support in various sectors, including security sectors.
