The Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta, Nobel Peace Laureate, congratulated himself in Macau with the freeing of Aung San Suu Kyi, declining to comment on Liu Xiabao whom he does not know and advised the West not to engage in confrontation with China.
“I congratulate the Burmese Government for freeing the lady (Aung San Suu Kyi) but foremost I see the need (for change) by western countries, primarily Europe and the United States, who for many years have maintained a policy of applying sanctions instead of engaging in dialogue,” Ramos-Horta said criticizing the sanctions policy that “only prejudices the people of Burma” and that “its is time to review this policy and take up dialog with the regime.”
Ramos-Horta expects that this “window of opportunity is taken advantage of by all to seek dialog and reconciliation in Myanmar,” he said.
Regarding the Chinese dissident Liu Xiabao, Ramos-Horta confessed his “ignorance” in not ever having heard of this Nobel Peace Laureate and “not knowing him, I will not make any comments regarding a Laureate.”
In the meantime, Ramos-Horta guaranteed knowing China, a country that has decided for itself and not conditional on others.
“When Deng Xiaoping effected the reforms he wanted it was because the Chinese leadership wanted to make reforms, not because the Nobel Committee in Oslo or the United States or Europe dictated to them to change the course of the reforms in China,” he affirmed.
The Timorese President recalled that China has 1.3 billion people and that within its borders “will fit 100 countries”, for which he advised the United States and Europe to stop confronting China.
“As regards China much prudence is called for because it is a very vast nation, with 5,000 years of history, with a very turbulent past and many Chinese still have a fresh memory of the misery of the past, the dangers they see in instability and because of this I say that there is no Nobel Peace Prize, there is no force that can influence the course of events in China,” concluded the Timorese president.
