Macau, China, 13 Nov – Bilateral cooperation relations with China are significant and range from construction of infrastructure, to house East Timorese state institutions, to agriculture, with the development of an innovative project to introduce hybrid rice, the President of East Timor, José Ramos Horta said Saturday in Macau.

Ramos Horta, who is taking part in the 3rd Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries, noted that trade between China and East Timor had seen a significant rise since 2008 and this year stood at US$24 million so far.

The President of East Timor noted, “the manifestations of solidarity and support from the governments of the People’s Republic of China and the Macau Special Administrative Region (...) since 2000, by offering equipment, financing Timorese professional, welcoming young students to the University of Macau and other universities, financed through 25 scholarships from the government of China and the Macau government.”

Ramos Horta also said in reference to relations with China, that East Timor has purchased two new ships for its Naval Defence Force at a cost of US$30 million and was building, in partnership with a Chinese company, a power plant and national power grid - an integrated project with almost US$400 million, which will guarantee an electricity supply to 80 percent of the country and allow for industrialisation to be launched and modernisation of the East Timor economy, over the next 20 years.

The head of state also said that business relations between East Timor and the People’s Republic of China had led to a veritable “explosion” in investment – in hotels, restaurants, construction materials, white goods, furniture and small retailers.

Ramos Horta also said that East Timor over the last three years had posted robust economic growth, which had reached 12 percent. (macauhub)
