AUSTRALIA TO CUT EAST TIMOR AID ADVISOR POSITIONS

.
ABC RADIO AUSTRALIA - 1-11/10

Australia will cut a third of its technical adviser positions in East Timor over the next two years.

AusAID has been reviewing its programs in a number of countries and announced that 29 of the 82 advisor positions in East Timor will be phased out to make Australian aid more effective.

Money saved will be redirected to rural development and other priority areas, according to AusAID.

Gary Lee, the director of campaigns at Aid Watch welcomed the announcement, saying it was long overdue and he called for more accountability in the review process.

"But I think it's also really important that these reviews are made publically available as soon as possible to allow greater transparency in terms of what was covered in these reviews," he said.

The first move will be those who are in TL earning high salaries but surplus to the requirement! Moreover, TL government’s officials should be accountable to donors as how and why they hire certain individuals to work for the government of East-Timor. Thus will avoid members of government hiring their own espouses and friends to do a job that a national can do perfectly well, better and for less money.
Value-for-money is only has its true meaning if we were to see more training for Timorese nationals, as they are the ones who will run their own country while internationals interests are to pocketing money as much as they could in a very short period of time and for a very little work!
