Naktuka is a crucial conflicting area because it lies on the lowlands.

VIVAnews - The discussion on border issues between Indonesia and Timor Leste is yet to have any promising outcome. The failure is likely to have been resulted from lack of involvement from the provincial governments and public figures.

Menurut Danrem 161 Wirasakti/Kupang Kolonel Arth. I Dewa Ketut Siangan perundingan ke-24 akan dilangsungkan di Batugede, Distrik Bobonari, pertengahan November mendatang.

The matters being discussed include such areas as Naktuka, Oepoli, Kupang Regency, and Oecusi District, Bijael Sunan (Oben).

The main focus is aimed at Naktuka because Timor Leste has placed 44 families in the conflicting region.

"In addition to shelters, Timor Leste had built an immigration post and agriculture office there. However, the buildings were then destroyed after the Indonesian Military registered some protest. It was said that the conflicting area should have been freed from civil actions," said Commander of Military office of Kupang, Col. I Dewa Ketut Siangan today.

According to him, during a visit made by Timor Leste's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao in Atambua, his party managed to hold talks on Naktuka borders.

"Xanana made an offer to clean up the Naktuka area and the 44 families would be transferred to another area," he said.

Naktuka is a crucial conflicting area because it lies on the lowlands and yet it is a center of rice production.

To deal with the conflicting areas, Indonesia and Timor Leste agreed to form a Special Working Group whose members are from the two countries.

"The discussions have been going nowhere because they have only involved the diplomats of Jakarta and Dili. Given the Special Working Group, the issue is expected to be instantly settled," he said.
