Indonesia and Portugal will strengthen bilateral ties, and vow to help development in Timor Leste, the world's youngest country, foreign ministers of the two countries said Wednesday.

The official visit of Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Filipe Marques Armando to Indonesia, the first ever visit by Portuguese officials in the last decade, is expected to step up the bilateral relations.

On Wednesday, Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa met with his Portuguese counterpart and said they have found a new orientation to develop the bilateral relationship.

To reach the goal, the two ministers signed an agreement on bilateral consultation between the foreign ministries of Indonesia and Portugal after the meeting.

"The dialogue (that) we have this morning was very good, we identified new orientations to develop our bilateral relation, on political, economic and cultural bases," the Portuguese foreign minister said.

On Timor Leste's development, Indonesia and Portugal will jointly help the young nation to develop, both ministers said.

"We firmly believed that both Portugal and Indonesia can contribute to the development of East Timor (Timor Leste)," said Armando.

He also said that both countries would help Timor Leste to get full membership of ASEAN.

Indonesian foreign minister said that the three countries, Indonesia, Portugal, and Timor Leste would build a partnership to promote development of Timor Leste.

Timor Leste was a former Portuguese colony and had been under Indonesian rules for over 24 years.
