GREENS leader Bob Brown has seized on voter disaffection with the two major parties to boost his party's bid to win the balance of power in the Senate.
Senator Brown, launching the Greens' campaign in Canberra, made a pitch for the votes of "Australians who are frustrated with the bickering, the short-sightedness, the leadership spills and the failure of vision" of the major parties.
But he was put on the defensive after saying the Greens would consider ways to make more humane any Bill allowing for the offshore processing of asylum-seekers in East Timor.
"We entertain every piece of legislation," he said. "We look at it and look at how to improve it and get a better dividend."
He later reaffirmed the party's opposition to offshore processing of asylum claims.
Labor wants to set up a regional processing centre, preferably in East Timor; the Coalition supports reopening the Howard-era detention centre on Nauru.
Senator Brown told the Herald Sun he did not believe new legislation would be needed to permit the go-ahead for East Timor or the reopening of Nauru. "However, if a regulation for either is required, the Greens will not support it," he said.
