TEMPO Interactive, Kupang:The Indonesia-Timor Leste Border Security Work Unit yesterday foiled an attempt to smuggle 1.265 liters of Premium fuel to Timor Leste.

The fuel, packed in 5 liter and 20 liter jugs, was confiscated at the Napan border post, in North Central Timor (TTU), along with one suspect.

The Border Mobile Brigade Platoon commander, Insp. Eujebio Bere Lafaek, said the fuel was confiscated by the East Nusa Tenggara Mobile Brigade team and the 742nd Indonesian Armed Forces members from a Napan villager, Martha Mano.

According to Lafaek, the fuel was to be smuggled to Timor Leste through back lanes at night time.

The method often used by the smugglers, Lafaek said, was to monitor the Border Work Unit’s movement during their patrols. When the patrols have passed the route where illegal transactions normally take place, the smugglers from Indonesian and Timor Leste begin their transactions.

The team, he said, will intensify monitoring and routine patrols at suspected routes. “We will intensify monitoring at these back lanes often used to smuggle goods to Timor Leste," said Lafaek.

The suspect has been smuggling fuel for 10 years. Normally, consumers in Timor Leste buy Premium oil for US$3 per liter.

The big profits from smuggling Premium oil to Timor Leste is what makes the suspect keep on smuggling, under the pretext of supporting the family.
