Dili- Brigadier General Lere Anan Timor has affirmed that Timor-Leste does not have the conditions to have an asylum seeker centre operating here and that the government has to measure the consequences of doing so before it makes any decision.
“The government has to analyze the reality of this nation before it decides on a policy of taking refugees from other countries,” stated Brigadier General Lere Anan Timor to the Jornal Diario Nacional at theF-FDTL headquarters in Tasi Tolu on Monday (16/8/10).
According to Lere the refugees who are likely to arrive here can be people who have been turned away from their own countries, by their governments, and sometimes they are people who have committed some crime or would not otherwise be running away.
Brigadier General Lere added that, Timor-Leste can open its doors to receive refugees from other countries, but the consequences for the near future must be measured.
He said that this issue is one that care must be taken with in order not to prejudice the future of our children and future generations, and for this very reason the Government must analyze its consequencesin depth first.
“Receiving refugees will impact on our children. It is just like rubbish where we put rubbish here we put it here but how will impact on Timor’s development in the future, this is a moral question to receive these refugees but what we want first is for the people of this country to have the right to freedom,” Lere pointed out.
“Timor-Leste as a nation can and should receive refugees from other countries who are being persecuted, because as our own history shows Timorese themselves had to seek refuge in other countries such as Portugal, Australia and other countries because it wanted to be independent,” Lere added.
