MP David Diaz from the Fretilin Party said Minister for Economy and Development, Joao Gonsalves agreed with Australia’s proposal, asking Leste-Leste to set up asylum seekers processing center in the country, as he [the minister] was holding dual citizenship [Timor-Leste and Australia’s citizenship].
Minister Gonsalves is also Australian citizen; therefore he should firmly defend Australia’s interest,” MP Ximenes said. Ximenes said Australia’s big country, so it should not ask Timor-Leste to provide them space for setting up refugee detention center in the country.
MP Hermen Barros from the Social Democratic Party (PSD) said the recent comments made by Minister Gonsalves was representing individual not the party.
Minister Gonsalves has recently made the comments, saying the country’s Atauro Island could be used for setting up asylum seekers processing center.
