EGO Lemos will share his stories of overcoming adversity and looking to a bright future when he performs at the Darwin Festival this week.

The East Timorese musician will be playing tracks from his new album, O Hele Le, for the first time in the Territory.

Lemos has performed at the Darwin Festival before, and returns to the Territory stage following a series of international shows.

"It's a very exciting time for me," he said.

"I will play solo and with two other musicians from East Timor.

"The music is more about the environment and East Timor - some might be interested in the tunes, others the issue itself," Lemos said.

"I have composed song about farmers, songs about water and environmental issues of environmental destruction.

"I have also composed songs about unity, because East Timorese have had a past of oppression.

"There is lots of trauma, depression and a lot of anger is still there.

"I have tried to write about unity and peace to encourage people to keep positive and to have hope.

"To stay optimistic about the future and not think about the negative side."

Lemos said the last song he wrote for the latest offering was the one which ended up first on the 10-track album.

"The last song I composed was Balibo," he said.

"This was the first time I wrote a song for a movie.

"In the song itself, I tried to be positive - I used Balibo as a reference, but I used the context of journalism as a whole.

"Not only did five Australian journalists face that problem, but journalists all over the world face that.

"That's why I didn't mention the names of people or the country."

Ego Lemos is playing at The Lighthouse at Darwin Festival at 9pm tomorrow and 7pm on Tuesday.

Tickets are $30/25 by calling 8980 3333 or visiting darwinfestival.org.au
