TIMOR-LESTE PLANS TO MILITARIZE BORDER

State Secretary for Defense, Julio Thomas Pinto said Timor-Leste had made plans to militarize its border zone.

The state secretary made the comments after participating in bilateral meeting with Australia at Hotel Timor on Thursday (29/7).

Pinto stressed that Australia would help provide Timor-Leste infrastructural assistance to set up security posts in the country’s border and to train the Timorese Defense Force (F-FDTL) on border security.

“During the meeting we were also presenting border security, we explained about cooperation with the PNTL and how is the process of border security. The state policy to militarize the border, the F-FDTL should be placed to conduct mandate of the constitution to back up the police in the border,” Pinto said.

Pinto added that plans of militarizing the border would not be implemented shortly, as it should prepare logistics and the F-FDTL’s professionalism.
