DILI, East Timor — Dyncorp International’s Jack White and Jack Hayes were among those celebrating the recent opening of a new community center in East Timor’s capital city.
They support the U.S. Navy Mobile Construction Battalion 11 — Seabees whose mission is to strengthen stability and peace in the fledgling nation.
The new center, opened June 24, is one of the Navy’s civil projects restoring schools, building community centers and improving infrastructure.
The dedication drew 200, including the Navy contingent, officials from the U.S. Embassy and the East Timor government, local community members, and sailors and marines from the USS Peleliu and the USS Pearl Harbor, two ships in port at the time.
Just seven weeks before the site had been a muddy pit. Now it is a place for youth to gather, a venue for community events and a classroom for the English lessons that will begin in August. It’s the first building NMCB 11 has built from the ground up. Other projects have been restorations of schools and the local university.
