Director for Timor Leste Media Development Center (TLMDC) Francisco Garry said the Timorese National Police (PNTL) officers who were suspected of being engaged in maltreating the Diario Nacional daily journalist may hamper journalism activities and that should be taken to for further legal charge.
Garry said role of the journalist was very important to transmit educative information and was guaranteed by the constitution and the journalist ethical code.
If the PNTL does not respect the journalist and that will hamper the process of journalism in collecting stories and committing crime against the journalist that is why we should not keep silent”.
He stressed that “I think that PNTL should have information about the journalist role because the journalist role is to educate and inform the pubic and is also being social controller,”.
On the other hand the director of Timor Post Jose Maria Ximenes said whether it was wrong or not the PNTL engaged in maltreating the journalist, it was against the law because the journalist had the right and freedom to gather information and to deliver it.
The PNTL should give the journalist chance to collect stories related to any issues in the country.
