LUCIA RESPONSIBLE FOR MATERNUS BERE'S RELEASE

MPs in the Parliament said Justice Minister, Lucia Lobato was reasonable to be responsible for the release of the ex-militia commander, Maternus Bere last year, as Bere’s release was against the country’s constitution.

Meanwhile, the Fretilin Secretary General Mari Alkatiri said the court should also take Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao and President Horta to respond to the court, as both Gusmao and Horta were the one who asked to release Bere.

MP Fernanda Borges said it was too late for Minister Lucia Lobato to make a self-defense saying she was ordered by Gusmao and Horta.

Borges said Minister Lobato should not make such decision, because it breached the constitution.

The ex-militia commander, Maternus Bere was released on August 30, last year based on the request of President Horta, as it could impact bilateral ties of Indonesia and Timor-Leste.

Things getting murkier and murkier! According to nacional law, MPs, members of government and diplomats enjoy some sort of immunities. In another words, the law protect them if decisions that they made are against or might be considered as against the law. The decision to release Maternus Bere is one of many. However, it sounds that the Justice Minister is not immune as she has been singled out as the sole guilty party when there were other ministries were also involved, e.g. Ministerio de Assuntos Internos, MNE, PM and PR. Are other ministers and the latter two immune from such a dreadful decision? The buck should ultimately stop with PM and PR!

There was no word "late" in the legal process and finding the truth takes time.
