Indonesian parliament called for special attention on former Timor-Leste's refugees in which thousands of them in East Nusa Tenggara province do not get a proper social help, a chairman said in Jakarta on Monday.

Speaker of Indonesian parliament Marzuki Alie said in his remarks at a parliamentary plenary session that the problem does not only cover political matters, but also social and humanitarian ones, namely basic needs that could not be fulfilled well, among others.

"Up till now, there are many former Timor-Leste's refugees with very sad life whereas they are victims of political conflict of countries (between Indonesia and Timor-Leste). And more concerning thing is that many of them are pro-integration (with Indonesia)," he said.

He added that in the condition, many former refugees are felt being marginalized in their own country.

"They live in improper accommodation and in a difficulty to find jobs. In fact, some of them experience marginalization and risked to be sent away from place they live now as land lords do not allow them to live there," he said.

Therefore, he said, the government needs to make policies and programs to help and empower them.

"They are parts of Indonesian citizens who need protection and help to improve their quality of life," he said.
