Human Rights Association and Judicial System Monitoring Program Ask For Justice in the Maternus Bere Case

The Human Rights Association and the Judicial System Monitoring Program have asked the Court of Appeal to accelerate the judicial process regarding the person who ordered the release of former militia leader Maternus Bere, last year.

They also appealed to the President of the Court of Appeal, Claudio Ximenes, to inform them whether or not it had indicted the person responsible for freeing Maternus Bere.

In response, the President of the Court of Appeal, Claudio Ximenes said that the Maternus Bere case is being processed right now. Ximenes declined to make comments regarding the freeing of Bere, as,it was not within his powers to speak on this case.

In the meantime the Justice Minister, Lucia Lobato, said that she was ready to face responsibility for the Maternus Bere case, the man who was freed last year.

“I am ready to appear in court to answer regarding the freeing ofMaternus Bere.”

“I am going to ask the Prime Minister to dismiss me from my portfolio for the decision to free Bere, although, the decision was not made by me, but it was only made in the interests of the country,” said Lobato.
