TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Dozens of former East Timorese who opted to keep their Indonesian citizenship and crossed from East Timor territory to Indonesia stormed the provincial office of East Nusa Tenggara to demand the promised assistance for former East Timorese in form of cash and housing.
Dozens of Public Order personnel and police officers blocked the protesters from barging into the office room of Governor Lebu Raya as they attacked the provincial office staff who tried to prevent their action.
Spokesman for the protesters JB Ema Onang said they haven’t received the Rp5 million-assistance per family promised by the government for East Timor refugees, who chose to join Indonesia after the secession of East Timor through the UN-sponsored referendum in 1999.
Ema said the central government disbursed Rp100 billion for former East Timorese in East Nusa Tenggara, Rp98 billion he said was used by local authorities to build houses for them, which they haven’t occupied.
They also demand explanation over thousands of families from East Timor which are not included on the refugee list by local authorities. They claimed there are 158 thousand families from East Timor among them but there were only 51,668 families on the regional administration’s list.
