East Timor President José Ramos Horta has expressed his “shock and deep sorrow” over the road-accident death of a Portuguese GNR officer serving with UN forces in East Timor.
In a letter this week to his Portuguese counterpart, Cavaco Silva, Ramos Horta said his sorrow was “even greater” because Sgt. Hermenegildo Marques’ death was the first of a Republic National Guard (GNR) officer in his country.
GNR paramilitary police units have served under UN command in East Timor since a wave of violence in 2006.
Ramos Horta praised the GNR’s record of “professional, competent and dedicated service” in East Timor, saying the force had gained “the recognition of all Timorese”. TPN/Lusa
