Private Tim Aplin, Private Ben Chuck, and Private Scott Palmer were part of a Special Operations Task Group from the Sydney-based second commando regiment based in Tarin Kowt.

Private Timothy James Aplin, 38, had served in the Australian army since 1992. He was on his second tour to Afghanistan and had also served in Iraq and East Timor.

Private Benjamin Chuck, 27, joined the army in 2004 and was on his third tour to Afghanistan. He was the patrol medic within his sniper team.

Seven other Australian soldiers injured in the crash are being transferred for medical treatment in Germany. Six underwent surgery yesterday and two are in a serious condition.

They were among 15 coalition troops on a helicopter that crashed in Kandahar province.

Defence force Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston says it was not brought down by enemy action rather a problem with the helicopter in the dark in very rugged terrain.

The deaths take to 16 the number of Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan since 2001.
