Australia may give more funding to a key NGO project in East Timor after the country's president Jose Ramos Horta last week strongly criticised the level of aid given to the Peace Dividend Trust's business directory.
Dr Ramos Horta said assistance to the project was being cut even as Australia's aid agency, AusAID, was spending millions on highly paid technical advisers.
The Peace Dividend Trust also said that funding for the project, which helps channel aid to local entrepreneurs, was insufficient to keep it going.
AusAID had earlier said funding had been agreed to enable the directory to continue until mid 2011 when it would be handed over to the East Timorese.
Now, in a new statement, AusAID says it's continuing discussions with the trust to determine how much funding it will get for the business directory for the coming year.
