AusAID:Peace Dividend Trust

.
For Immediate Release – Peace Dividend Trust

Dili 13 June 2010, Support to the private sector is an important part of Australia’s $100 million per year aid program to East Timor.

AusAID is continuing discussions with Peace Dividend Trust over its work to support private sector investment by compiling a business directory. Dialogue is currently taking place to determine the scale of support in the 2010-2011 financial year. AusAID looks forward to a positive outcome from these talks.

Australia has been Peace Dividend Trust’s most substantial donor in Timor-Leste over the past three years. During this period, Australia has provided around A$2.6 million to support the Trust’s work.

Further Australian funding to the Trust would come on top of a comprehensive range of existing activities to strengthen East Timor’s private sector. This includes work on enhanced agricultural productivity, which has seen yield increases of between 23 and 80 percent; support to encourage the international trade of livestock; and assistance to build and maintain roads which has provided 35,000 Timorese men and women with short-term work and repaired 700km of roads. From 2010-11, Australia will be investing a further $8.7 million in a program to promote private sector development and make market opportunities more accessible for poor men and women in East Timor.
