PRESS STATEMENT
The President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Dr. José Ramos-Hotra, today strongly denounced North Korea’s vicious action against the Republic of Korea Ship ‘Cheonan’.
The President stated: “After the joint investigation conducted by the United States, the United Kingdom, the Kingdom of Sweden and Australia, with a thorough review of all the physical evidence in relation to the sinking of the Republic of Korea Navy Vessel Cheonan, I believe that the sinking of the ship was a premeditated act carried out by North Korean forces.
Therefore, Timor-Leste most strongly condemns this unprovoked, hostile and unlawful military action against the Cheonan.
” The Republic of Korea is a friendly, peaceful and democratic country that over many years has provided hundreds of millions of dollars in humanitarian assistance to the starving millions who are enslaved by the corrupt, incompetent and unelected leaders of North Korea.”
Successive governments in the Republic of Korea have made efforts to engage the outdated communist regime of the North in dialogue and cooperation.
The 5 members of the Six Party Talks namely -- the Republic of Korea, the United States, China, Japan and Russia -- have made reasonable effort to engage the regime in the North in dialogue towards ending its armed nuclear ambition.
” The North Korean regime is an aberration in the 20th and 21st Centuries that otherwise has seen many positive political developments which include the successful transition democracy in the Republic of Korea in the 1990s and elsewhere into Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and Africa. North Korea stands out in stark contrast to reach of its neighbors.” -END
