Residents in the Capital of Dili have called on the Timorese Finance Minister Emilia Pires to clarify her email that she sent to her friend in Australia in 2006, saying that it was better to integrate with Australia if Mari Alkatiri continues to govern this country.
A resident of Komoro (Dili), Jacinto Marques, has said that it was important for Minister Pires to clarify her statement in the email as it was part of defending herself from the allegation against her.
Marques said that it was big mistake if it was true that Minister Pires really made such statement in her email to her friend, because many people sacrifice their self due to the country liberation.
“Many were dead during the war because of struggle for independence and not to integrate with Australia or another country,” Marques said.
Meanwhile, Marfin Nunes, friend of Marques also said that it was better for Minister Pires to resign from her political post if she really made such statement.
At the same time, MP Jose Manuel Fernandes, from Fretilin has confirmed that it was true that the Finance Minister Emilia Pires sent an email to an Australian activist on June 16th 2006 saying that “Timor-Leste will not reach peach in the future if we let Mari Alkatiri to continue govern this country. I tell you that I will support integration with Australia, at least they will do something to this country with their good manager and they will provide good house. I believe that one day people will get access roads, telecommunication and we will capable to read and write and so fort. Even we have to sacrifice our identity as Timorese People,” MP Fernandes restated.
MP Fernandes also considered Minister Pires had no national spirit for the Timor-Leste Government and independence.
MP Natalino dos Santos from the National Congress for the Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT) has called on the Parliament to see this case soon, adding that it was crime if Minister Pires truly sent this email to her friend.
