Government Firm Pipeline Must Come to TL; Australian MNR “Threatens” SENR
TIMOR POST: 23.4.2010
Lautem-The decision by the AMP government led by Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao to insist on bringing the Greater Sunrise pipeline to Timor-Leste has resulted in a strong reaction from Australia.
PM Xanana has informed that recently the Australian government, through the Minister for Natural Resources, sent a threatening letter to Timor-Leste’s Secretary of State for Natural Resources Alfredo Pires.
Although he did not divulge the content of the letter that the Australian minister addressed to the Secretary of State for Natural Resources, the head of the government merely said that the letter from the Australian Minister threatened the Timor-Leste Secretary of State over the Sunrise pipeline issue.
Neither did Xanana disclose what the threat to Timor-Leste by the Australian government was, but he added, that the government which he leads will not retreat from the option of building the pipeline to Timor-Leste.
“We were not frightened by the threats from the Indonesian Generals before, now that we are independent they are threatening us again I can say, ‘who is scared’?” he said.
Xanana said that he would continue to hold the position that the pipeline has to be brought to Timor-Leste because the pipeline from Bayu Undan has already been built to Darwin-Australia, despite Bayu Undan being closer to Timor-Leste than Australia.
So, to be just, he added, the pipeline from Greater Sunrise (GS) must be brought to Timor-Leste. “ I am always screaming (GS has to come to Timor) but they (Australia) say we are stupid,” said the Prime Minister.
In order to make sure the GS pipeline comes to Timor-Leste, Banana said that all Timorese must unite and speak in one voice that “the pipeline must come to Timor-Leste. We all have to look towards winning this war (GS pipeline),” he said.
The head of the government said that Timor-Leste politicians should not lean towards Australia to defend Australia’s interests.
If this happens, Banana said, then these political leaders will be gravely betraying the people and sacred land of Timor-Leste.
Xanana also recounted that with respect to the maritime delimitation of the sea between Australia and Timor-Leste, that by rights Timor-Leste should have all rights to the Joint Petroleum Development Area (JPDA).
However, during the Indonesian occupation, the then Indonesian Minister for Foreign affairs signed an agreement dividing the Timor Sea.
Then after Independence, Xanana said that the Timor-Leste government made every effort to retrieve it, but when the case could be brought to the International Court of Arbitration, the Australian government withdrew from the International Court’s jurisdiction. (jorgino antos)
