Timor-Leste’s Minister of Economic Development João Mendes Gonçalves has said that the coalition government led by Prime Minister Kayrala Xanana Gusmão reduced poverty rate by 12.2% in 2009.
“Through the 2009 state budget the government could reduce poverty down to 12.2% indicating that the poverty is increasingly lower,” said Minister Gonçalves.
Minister Gonçalves made the statement during a national congress of Timor-Leste’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry held last week at Hotel Timor, Dili.
He added, “We all know that according to international experts and Timorese economists, the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and other institutions that Timor-Leste’s economic growth had impacted in the reduction of poverty at least 8% per annum.”
He said, “When the AMP Government ruled the country just for five months it could increase the economic growth of the country up to 8.4% and when we entered the 2008 fiscal year, the economic growth reached up to 12.8%, which was number two of the highest economic growth in the world.”
According to 2007’s Timor-Leste’s Standard of Living Survey the poverty rate in the country was 49.9%, an increase of 13.6% of national poverty rate in 2001.
If the statement of Minister Gonçalves is accurate, then the poverty rate in the country is now 37.7%.
Despite the huge economic growth, Timor-Leste’s is one of the poorest countries on earth and the poorest in the region.
