MP Elizário Ferreira from Fretilin has said Monday that the there is strong indication that the Government, via the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce and Industry, is selling rotten rice to the people.

“Last Saturday, I myself went to the storage (Bebora) and I took some pictures with my mobile where I saw almost all the rice in the storage is rotten but the staff of the Ministry took the rice out and put it on a tarpaulin, tore away the old bag and then put the rice in new bags and later to sell it to the population with US$12,” said Ferreira.

According to Ferreira, the population has complained about the rice with such texture and the government should stop selling such rice to the population as it may harm their health.

“Almost all of the rice stored there are rotten and that local people has asked the Ministry not to sell the rice to them because the rice has very unpleasant smells,” he added.

MP Josefa Pereira stated that the government has wasted the money of the population to buy millions tones of rice but almost all the rice are now rotten in government-run store room.

“It is a lamentable situation for me to see how the Government sells such putrid rice to the population with US$15,” said MP Pereira.

MP Renan Selak of UNDERTIM shared also the same concern, saying that the government should find out solution to the problems of poor management of state rice and rice scarcity among the population, especially in remote areas of Timor-Leste.

They call for the dismissal of the Minister of Tourism, Commerce and Industry for being so spendthrift.
