President José Ramos Horta has said that the best way to resolve the issue of Greater Sunrise’s pipeline whether to Australia or to Timor-Leste is to take a middle ground by having a floating platform as it would also beneficial to Timor-Leste.

“It depends on the Government’s negotiators to take care of the issue and I look forward to being briefed on the issue however it they decide that to have a floating platform in the Sea, it is still beneficial to Timor-Leste,” said the head of the state.

According to Horta, Shell Company, an investor in the development of Sunrise’s oil and gas has suggested that having a floating platform in the Timor Sea is beneficial to Timor-Leste.

He also said that it is not necessary to negotiate with the government of Australia on this matter but it has to be negotiated with investors as the issue is highly technical and commercial.

Recently an MP from the opposition called the government to have negotiation also with the government of Australia to decide whether to land the Greater Sunrise’s pipeline in Timor-Leste or Australia.

Woodside Company, the o perator of the Greater Sunrise’s oil and gas development, has offered three options: to have pipelines either to Australia or Timor-Leste and to have a floating platform.

Both Timor-Leste and Australia has 50-50 share of oil and gas revenues from the Greater Sunrise field.
