MARIA Pires has begged her daughter Angelita to come home to Darwin after she was found not guilty of plotting to assassinate East Timor President Jose Ramos Horta.
Angelita Pires has vowed to stay in Dili and fight for the freedom of 23 Timorese men jailed for between nine and 16 years over the plot.
But her mother said she fears for her daughter's safety if she decides to stay in East Timor. "She called me right after the verdict, she was crying and screaming," Mrs Pires said yesterday. "I said the only thing you can do now is come home. "If she wants to (live in East Timor), OK, but come home for a while.
That's what I'm trying to tell her but how can I do it? "In Timor anything can happen. That's why I want her to come home." The Pires family fled East Timor for Darwin after the Indonesian invasion in 1975. Angelita attended Nightcliff High School and worked at the Darwin casino.
But she returned to her country of birth after it gained independence in 1999. In February 2008 she was arrested over the plot to assassinate Mr Ramos Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, who she worked for on her return to Dili.
Maria Pires has endured more than two years of sleepless nights worrying her daughter would be sent to jail for 20 years. "It's been a long two years ... long and hard days. It's been very stressful," she said.
