A Parliamentary Investigation Team into the case of rice importation in 2009 has revealed that some members of the government granted the project to import rice to their own wives or husbands and their own family members.
The report, which was submitted to the President of the National Parliament on March 9, 2010, also found that there was massive manipulation by government appointed rice importers in that only US$ 17 million out of US$80 M was traced.
The probe also found that thought it was clearly set out in the contract that rice importers to pay import tax, they failed to pay tax.
It is also said that there are manipulation in the contract signed with the same having different budget allocation.
According to the parliament’s law, 30 days after the submission of the report, there will be parliamentary plenary to discuss the findings.
The Investigation Team consisted of 11 members, representing each party bench present at the National Parliament, was established on December 17, 2009.
