MP Estanislau Aleixo da Silva from Fretilin had warned that the government’s tactic to use Petronas to threaten Woodside in order to land pipeline from Greater Sunrise to Timor-Leste will not work unless there are serious negotiation with Australian Government and Woodside Company.

“Timor-Leste should have serious negotiation agenda with the Government of Australia and Woodside to present our alternatives of bringing the pipeline to Timor-Leste,” said Mr. Da Silva.

He said that the government should not use Petronas to threaten Woodside as a way of dealing with the issue of taking pipeline to Timor-Leste.

He also said that it is insufficient for the government to argue that there is a study and the study says that it is technologically possible to bring the pipeline to Timor-Leste.

He also said that the government should also involve Fretilin in this process as it touches the national interest of everyone, including Fretilin.

“If we want to do something, it is better to unite and mobilize all resources we have in the country, including Fretilin but the reality shows that they want to exclude Fretilin,” said the Prime Minister of the Third Constitutional Government.

Woodside Company, the operator of the oil and gas development from Greater Sunrise, have opted for bringing the pipeline to Australia as the best possible option.

The government of Timor-Leste rejected the option and also the option of having a floating platform and expressed that its national interests are best protected when the pipelines is brought to Timor-Leste.
